Cacao Ceremony & Cacao
Discovered by the Olmec in 1500 B.C. Cacao has been used in ancient ceremonies and religious rituals by ancient Native Mesoamerican cultures for thousands of years.

Cacao was considered sacred. It contains an active ingredient in it called theobromine, which can be translated into, “Food of the Gods”. The word cacao also comes from the Maya word Chokola’j, which means to drink chocolate together.
“Mesoamerica is a historical and important region and cultural area in southern North America and most of Central America. It extends from approximately central Mexico through Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica.”
Cacao was also used for its medicinal qualities. As a remedy for fatigue and along with other plants, to bring down a fever.
With its arrival in Europe, many more of its medicinal uses were discovered, including for digestive issues, nutritional purposes and to improve mood and virility. Cacao is naturally high in iron, magnesium and B-complex vitamins.
A cacao ceremony is a type of Shamanic healing. It is rooted in helping to re-balance the energies within us and restore good health. By opening the heart, cacao allows you to connect with yourself and others more deeply.
Today there are many different types of cacao ceremonies. Many will involve a group of people sitting in a sacred circle, drinking hot mugs of ceremonial grade cacao, mixed with milk and spices. It creates a safe space to set intentions, and share hopes, dreams and fears.
It is a beautiful, relaxing and healing experience.
